Assessing the Assault Risk for Officers
Following the tragic murder of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, it is important to note that major felony assaults on police and peace officers have increased by 13.3%, in contrast to a 3.0% rise in overall assaults year-to-date (as of 3/24/2024). Police and peace officers in NYC are 19.4 times more likely to be assaulted compared to the general NYC population, with traffic agents and school safety agents experiencing a 3.4 and 2.3 times greater risk of assault, respectively.
