Hypothetical Resignation Letter from Letitia James: “I’m Innocent, But I’m Out”
August 1, 2025
Governor Kathy Hochul
NYS Executive Chamber
Albany, NY 12224Dear Governor Hochul,
It is with a heavy heart that I submit my resignation as Attorney General of the State of New York, effective immediately.
Throughout my career, I have been guided by a commitment to justice, transparency, and the unwavering belief that no one is above the law. These principles have driven my office’s actions, including our pursuit of accountability from those in the highest echelons of power.
Recently, I have been the target of allegations concerning my personal real estate transactions. Let me state unequivocally: these claims are baseless and politically motivated. They are part of a broader campaign of retaliation by former President Donald Trump and his allies, aimed at discrediting those who have held him accountable for his actions.
The timing and nature of these allegations are not coincidental. After securing a $450 million judgment against Mr. Trump for fraudulent activities, it’s evident that these attacks are designed to undermine my credibility and distract from his own legal challenges.
While I am confident in my innocence and the integrity of my actions, I recognize that the ongoing media frenzy and political attacks are detracting from the important work of the Attorney General’s office. To ensure that the office can continue its mission without distraction, I have decided to step aside and focus on clearing my name.
I remain steadfast in my commitment to the principles of justice and will continue to fight against the misuse of power and the erosion of our democratic institutions.
Sincerely,
Letitia A. James
Attorney General (Resigned)
State of New York
Dissecting the Denial: What Her Fictional Letter Actually Confirms
1. “Baseless Allegations” — Meet the Power of Attorney
James claims the allegations are “politically motivated.” But the declaration of Virginia principal residence wasn’t made by Trump. It was signed by Letitia James herself on August 17, 2023, under penalty of law, and recorded in Norfolk, VA. Her signature. Her intent. Her words: “I HEREBY DECLARE that I intend to occupy this property as my principal residence.”
2. “Legal Formality” — Then Why the Mortgage Clause?
She agreed to a mortgage requiring her to occupy the Virginia home as her primary residence within 60 days and maintain it for a year—smack in the middle of her Trump trial in NYC. Either she lied to the lender or vacated her post. Public Officers Law § 30(1)(d) is clear: if you move out of state, you lose your office. There’s no exemption for “family transactions.”
3. “Clerical Misunderstanding” — 20 Years of False Filings?
The claim that her Brooklyn unit count issues were inherited or misunderstood falls apart under scrutiny. She filed permits in 2020 listing 4 units. The Certificate of Occupancy has said 5 units since 2001. The building has six electric meters, one for each unit and one for the common areas. And she received a HAMP mortgage reserved for 1–4 unit properties. You don’t make the same “clerical error” 20+ times across 20 years.
4. “Distractions from the Work of the Office” — But the Work is Built on Similar Fraud
James prosecuted Trump for real estate misrepresentations. Her own filings include multiple undisclosed or misclassified mortgages, permit irregularities, unjustified luxury jet travel, and repeated document contradictions. The hypocrisy is staggering. The selective enforcement is enraging.
Boxed In, No Matter What
Whether Letitia James stays or resigns, her defenses fall apart under the weight of her own signatures. If she truly believed this was all a smear job, she’d welcome a full investigation. Instead, she blames Trump while ducking every substantive question about her own documents.
So here’s the corner she’s backed into: either she lied to New York, or she lied to her lenders. Or both. This isn’t about politics. It’s about paper. And every page she signed tells the same story: fraud at the top, and silence at the top—until now.
